The Coast Guard began a long-term maintenance project at Diamond Head Lighthouse in Honolulu in early August.
The project will focus on repairing aging concrete and replacing railings, decks, ladders, windows and frames. During the construction, the lighthouse tower will be temporarily covered with scaffolding and sheeting as a safety measure.
The project is anticipated to be completed in the Spring of 2027.
A temporary aid-to-navigation light for mariners will be installed on the lighthouse for the duration of the construction project.
The 55-foot tower of the current Diamond Head Lighthouse was constructed in 1917. The adjacent residence, built in 1921, serves as the living quarters for commanders of Coast Guard Oceania District – a command overseeing Coast Guard units and operations in Hawaii, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Singapore and Japan.
