FEMA announced $59 million in funding to North Carolina to eliminate flood risks at severely damaged properties following Hurricane Helene.
The state will use this funding to buy more than 150 damaged properties, bringing needed relief to homeowners. The land will be converted to green space and deed restricted, eliminating future flood risk.
Here are some key acquisition projects recently approved across Western North Carolina:
- $51.7 million for 142 damaged properties in Buncombe County.
- $2.4 million for 11 damaged properties in Haywood County.
- $2.4 million for nine damaged properties in Mitchell County.
These awards are from FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which empowers states, local governments, tribal nations and territories to complete activities and projects that prevent, eliminate, or reduce disaster-related damage. FEMA will provide the funding to North Carolina to disburse to local governments.
To date, FEMA has approved more than $146 million in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for North Carolina Helene projects, making communities more resilient.
