The U.S. Senate today confirmed Cameron Hamilton as Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), giving the agency a permanent leader as it faces another active disaster season and a period of significant organizational change. Hamilton was confirmed as part of a package of more than 70 executive branch nominees approved by the Senate.
Hamilton returns to FEMA after previously serving as the agency’s acting leader in 2025. His earlier tenure drew national attention when he publicly testified before Congress that he did not believe eliminating FEMA was “in the best interest of the American people,” a position that differed from the administration’s stated direction at the time. He was subsequently removed from the acting role, but his nomination and confirmation signal renewed confidence in his leadership as the administration pursues reforms to the nation’s disaster response system.
As Administrator, Hamilton inherits an agency managing more than 1,000 active disaster declarations while responding to a demanding wildfire and flood season. FEMA has also experienced significant workforce turnover, changes to grant programs, and ongoing discussions about its future role within the federal government. Hamilton has indicated that his priorities include streamlining disaster assistance, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, and improving the speed and effectiveness of FEMA’s support to states, tribes, territories, and local communities.
Before joining FEMA, Hamilton served as a U.S. Navy SEAL and later held emergency management leadership positions within the Departments of State and Homeland Security, where he oversaw emergency medical operations supporting border security missions.
His confirmation comes at a pivotal moment for the emergency management community. As climate-driven disasters grow in frequency and complexity, and policymakers continue to debate the appropriate federal role in disaster preparedness and recovery, Hamilton will be tasked with leading one of the nation’s most visible homeland security agencies through a period of transformation.
