Timothy Stone Named FBI Washington Field Office’s New Intelligence Chief

After more than 25 years of service across international operations, counterterrorism, and complex investigations, Timothy Stone has stepped into his newest leadership post as Special Agent in Charge of the Intelligence Division at the FBI’s Washington Field Office. He announced the move on LinkedIn, marking another milestone in a FBI career that spans some of the Bureau’s most strategic and sensitive missions.

Stone brings a combination of operational fieldwork, high-level diplomacy, and big-picture intelligence strategy to the role, making him a strong fit for one of the FBI’s most critical field offices. His most recent position was Deputy Assistant Director of Counterterrorism, where he helped steer national and international efforts to disrupt terror plots and safeguard U.S. interests at home and abroad.

Prior to that, he led FBI international operations across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East as Section Chief in the Bureau’s International Operations Division, overseeing a network of more than 240 FBI personnel in 52 foreign posts, supporting investigations in 136 countries.

Stone also served as Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Office, managing more than 1,500 investigations spanning cybercrime, financial fraud, violent crime, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism. He played a key role in launching a new headquarters for the division, building political support and funding while managing security design and planning.

His overseas experience includes a nearly three-year stint as Legal Attaché to Morocco, where he represented the FBI in diplomatic missions across Morocco, Mali, and Mauritania—helping to coordinate high-level law enforcement efforts on terrorism, cyber threats, and organized crime.

Earlier in his career, Stone supervised Joint Terrorism Task Force operations, ran squads targeting complex financial crime, and was part of the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG). His FBI journey began with roles as a special agent in Portland and Washington, D.C., and even earlier as an intelligence analyst.

Stone holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois Chicago and a bachelor’s from Radford University.
