Senior Federal Air Marshal John Nichols, a 24-year veteran of the Federal Air Marshal Service, died June 21, 2026, while reporting for duty in Arlington, Texas. He was 55.
Nichols had spent the last 17 months as a Task Force Officer assigned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). He was driving his government vehicle to the World Cup site in Arlington, where he was en route to his duty assignment, and suffered a medical episode that led to a car accident.
A Career of Service
Nichols joined the Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) in May 2002 and was assigned to the Dallas Field Office, where he served throughout his career. Beyond his work on in-flight security deployments as a Federal Air Marshal (FAM), he was a member of the Dallas Field Office’s Ground-Based Operations Team (formerly known as the Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) team), a Training Instructor and Training Officer, an Acting Supervisory FAM, an Operations Officer, and a current member of the North Texas JTTF.
Before joining FAMS, Nichols spent nine years in law enforcement with the National Park Service, where he served as a Law Enforcement Ranger. This included serving among those who stood watch protecting federal buildings in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks.
