Christopher Sadler Receives 2026 Romeo Durscher Leadership Award at DRONERESPONDERS Conference

Christopher Sadler, Senior Director of Unmanned Systems and Public Safety at the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC), has been named the recipient of the 2026 Romeo Durscher Leadership Award at the DRONERESPONDERS National Conference, recognizing his contributions to advancing drone technology in public safety operations.

Sadler leads unmanned systems and public safety initiatives at VIPC, where his work focuses on integrating emerging technologies into operational environments that support first responders and emergency management organizations. His efforts have helped expand the use of drone technology for public safety missions across the Commonwealth of Virginia and in collaboration with agencies nationwide.

The Romeo Durscher Leadership Award honors individuals who demonstrate leadership and innovation in the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for public safety. The award is named for the late Romeo Durscher, widely recognized as an early advocate for the use of drones in first responder operations. Durscher worked closely with law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and international organizations including Interpol, helping promote the adoption of drones for search and rescue, disaster response, and tactical operations. His work also influenced the design and development of several drone platforms and expanded their use across public safety missions.

Sadler received the award during the DRONERESPONDERS National Conference from retired Fire Chief Charles Werner, a longtime contributor to Homeland Security Today, Editorial Board member, and Unmanned Vehicles Editor at Large. Werner has been a leading figure in the advancement of drone programs within the fire service and public safety community, and has played a key role in supporting national standards and best practices for first responder drone operations, and is the director of DRONERESPONDERS.

The recognition highlights Sadler’s role in supporting innovation and operational development in the unmanned systems field, particularly in areas where new technologies are being integrated into real-world public safety environments.
