The sheriffs of five West Texas counties have joined together to oppose the proposed construction of a border wall in the Big Bend region, saying other strategies could better strengthen border security in the area.
Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez, Brewster County Sheriff Ronnie Dodson, Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West and Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland said they are united in their opposition to the project.
In a letter sent to federal and state officials, the sheriffs said the unique geography of the Big Bend region, including rugged mountains, deep canyons and vast desert terrain, already limits large-scale movement across the border, reducing the need for a physical wall in that area.
