Updated Report Tracks Jihadist Terrorism Trends in the U.S. Since 9/11

A report examining jihadist terrorism in the United States since the 9/11 attacks is offering an updated look at how the threat has evolved over more than two decades, with data continuing to be refreshed to reflect recent cases.

Originally published in September 2021, the report compiles and analyzes cases involving individuals accused of jihadist-related crimes either within the United States or by U.S. citizens abroad. It also includes a limited number of individuals widely reported to have engaged in such activity but who died before being formally charged.

The research focuses on three central questions: who is involved in jihadist terrorism targeting the United States, what motivates these individuals, and what level of threat they pose.

According to the report, the dataset centers on individuals inspired by or connected to ideologies associated with Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda or its affiliates. Cases tied to other groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, are excluded from the analysis.

While the written analysis reflects the original 2021 publication, the underlying data and figures continue to be updated, offering an evolving picture of the threat landscape over more than two decades since 9/11.
