Trump Nominates Rodney Scott to Lead Customs and Border Protection

Rodney Scott, former chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, has been named by President-elect Donald Trump to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). CBP, one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the United States with over 60,000 employees, is responsible for managing ports of entry, facilitating trade and travel, and securing the nation’s borders.

Scott served as Border Patrol chief for 19 months under both the Trump and Biden administrations. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in implementing key border enforcement initiatives, including the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly referred to as “Remain in Mexico,” and Title 42, a pandemic-era policy that allowed for expedited removal of migrants.

Scott began his career with the Border Patrol in 1992, spending much of his early years stationed in San Diego. At the time, San Diego was the busiest area for illegal border crossings, but a significant increase in enforcement efforts dramatically reduced traffic in the region. His experience in San Diego, where border wall construction began in the 1990s, has shaped his belief in the effectiveness of barriers. In 2017, he was appointed San Diego sector chief before becoming the head of Border Patrol in January 2020.

As CBP commissioner, Scott will oversee critical operations at more than 300 ports of entry, where officers process millions of travelers and goods annually. His extensive background in border security and enforcement places him firmly on the operational side of CBP’s mission, which balances border protection with facilitating legal trade and travel.
